Frequently Asked Questions

About the Van

Is there a fridge? Yes there is.  The fridge is a Dometic CF-25.  It can be set to either refrigerator or freezer temperature.  When you pick up the van it will be set just above freezing but if you’d like us to cool it down to freezer temps because you’re coming in hot with a bunch of frozen stuff just let us know.

Do I need to find a campsite with electrical?  No.  This van doesn’t have a hookup…nor does it need one.  Thankfully even our shortest days in this part of the world are enough to keep the ‘house’ battery topped up.  In addition to charging the battery with solar power, there is a one way connection between the van’s car battery and the ‘house’ battery which is used to keep the fridge, lights and inverter running.  When you’ve got the van running it will top up the ‘house’ battery.

Is the Van Insulated?  Yes.  But not 100%.  Behind the wooden paneling there is 1/2″ closed cell foam that insulates the van.  We also have insulated sun shades that can be used to insulate the windshield and driver/passenger windows at night.  The portions of the van with exposed metal are not insulated.  That being said, we have camped comfortably in temperatures in the forties.  We do not recommend this van to travel into areas that go below freezing since this van is not well equipped for snow.

Is there a toilet? Shower? Nope. If you wish to bring a camping toilet of some type, you’re welcome to it.

What outlets are in the van?  There is a 12 volt usb outlet in the cabin of the van.  In addition there are two 12 volt USB chargers in the back of the van that use the house battery (hooked up to the solar panel).  There is also an inverter that has two 110v outlets and two additional USB chargers.

About the Rental

2020_CabrilloMonumet

Do you deliver?  Yes.  The delivery fee is calculated based on the distance between the drop-off location and our house.  The fee will cover both the drop off and pick up but is subject to scheduling constraints.  See our listing page for more details and exact pricing.

How many miles are included in my rental?  We do have a mileage fee for miles over the rental allowance.  (Check our listing for the most updated information on mileage fee pricing).  Each rental includes 150 free miles per night that the van is rented.  If you rent from the first of the month to the eleventh of the month (10 nights) your rental will include 1500 miles.  Miles over 1500 will be subject to the mileage fee.

Do I need to fill up the van with gas before I return it?  Yes please.  We will fill up the van before you come to pick it up.  You should fill it up before you return the van.  We will not charge you an arm and a leg to fill up but we will charge you the going rate of gas in San Diego.

How do late fees work? The return time will be agreed upon before the rental begins.  Add-ons for a later return must be purchased ahead of time.  From Outdoorsy’s website:

If a renter returns an RV after the agreed rental period end time, they will be charged a late fee. This late fee is calculated by combining a one-time administrative fee of $30.00 plus the hourly rental rate (this rate is based on a prorated daily rental rate for that RV for each hour the RV is late). There is a 1 hour grace period with each rental. If the late return results in the disruption of another rental or if Outdoorsy needs to find the owner of the RV alternative transportation due to the late return, the renter will pay the full daily rate for every eight (8) hours the RV is late and an additional $100 administrative fee. These charges will be added to the initial rental rate agreed upon by the owner and renter.

How late is your late return add-on? How early is your early pick-up add-on? These add-ons are schedule dependent and vary on a case by case basis, but generally speaking, we are willing to do the early pick up as early as 8 am and the late-drop off as late as 10 PM.

What is this cleaning service fee? Is there a cleaning fee if I return the van dirty?  We have a cleaning fee on all our rentals that covers the typical cost of turning over the van between rentals.  We want to make sure the van and everything inside of it is exceptionally clean so we do have a cleaning fee that covers (some of) the cost of getting the van ready for each rental.  We don’t expect the vans to return to us as clean as they left….we want you to enjoy your trip and part of that is getting a little dirty on your hikes.  Camping IS messy and a little dirt, mud, and some coffee drips on the counter will not incur a cleaning fee from us.  If it is excessively dirty (ie food caked on the seats and dashboard in the cabin or ketchup smeared over all of the crates) or if there is anything that would be considered bio-hazardous we will charge an additional cleaning fee on a case by case basis.

I’m under 25.  Can I rent from you?  Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to accommodate renters under 25.
